Mark Wahlberg On The Worst Advice He Ever Got
“The Happening” may have been a critical flop, but nobody can say Mark Wahlberg holds any grudges against his erstwhile director M. Night Shyamalan. “He’s a sweet guy,” Wahlberg told us. “For whatever mistakes he’s made, I think he’s learned from them and he’s a true artist.”
But that doesn’t mean he’s fishing for career advice from the guy. Because as Wahlberg related, when he saw his ucpoming weapons-toting hero Max Payne in the editing room, “I was like, ‘Yes! This is the sh-t I need to be doing! This is the stuff that makes people say, ‘You know what, you’re the man!’ This is it!’”

IZOD Present “The Happening”
Film review: ‘Happening’ shocks, then bores
For a movie called “The Happening,” not much happens.
M. Night Shyamalan effectively delivers the usual broody air of foreboding that has been a trademark of his hits (”The Sixth Sense” and “Signs”) and misses (”Lady in the Water” and “Unbreakable”).
And this fear-mongering story of an airborne toxin that causes victims to snuff themselves in nasty ways — shoving hairpins into their throats, hurling themselves en masse off a high rise, the like — induces plenty of seat-squirming. The shock value wears off quickly, though, and writer-director Shyamalan strands us (along with Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel) in an ultimately boring cautionary tale with an infantile eco-message. ‘The Happening’ NYC Premiere
We talk ‘The Happening’ with Shyamalan, Wahlberg, Deschanel, and Leguizamo
Though The Happening–in its eerie examination of the nature of belief and fear–is reminiscent of director M. Night Shyamalan’s previous films, it also forges new ground for the filmmaker. For starters, it’s his first R-rated film, which Shyamalan claims is entirely appropriate, seeing as how it presents the tragic results of an apocalpyptic scenario hitting the northeastern United States. Tossing aside pretense, however, Shyamalan readily admits he’s made a B movie, in the tradition of the paranoia-soaked atomic-age sci-fi thrillers of the ’50s. But this B movie boasts one of the director’s strongest casts in recent memory, with Mark Wahlberg in the lead role of Elliot, a high school science teacher trying to make sense of some decidedly unsensible circumstances. The charmingly quirky Zooey Deschanel plays Alma, Elliot’s wife, who’s wrestling throughout this crisis with a secret she’s kept from her husband. And the multi-talented John Leguizamo is on-hand as the couple’s friend–and Elliot’s colleague–math teacher Julian, who seeks only to protect his own wife and child.
We spoke with Shyamalan and his cast at the film’s New York press junket yesterday, where they shared with us how they prepped for their roles, their experiences with the unexplainable, and of course their greatest fears…
